Johnson sakaja:Nairobi governor to be impeached.
- Nairobi MCAs have resolved to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing him of incompetence and neglect of ward-level projects
- A retreat in Naivasha next week will pave the way for signature collection, with over 96 members already backing the plan
- Both ODM and UDA MCAs are said to support the motion, leaving the governor politically exposed
A storm is brewing in Nairobi politics after a section of members of the county assembly resolved to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The county lawmakers are accusing him of incompetence and neglect of crucial ward-level development projects.
Why is Sakaja facing impeachment?
The resolution came after a Speaker’s Kamkunji chaired by Speaker Ken Ngondi, where MCAs vented their frustrations over what they described as the governor’s failure to deliver.
The legislators have now planned a retreat in Naivasha next Tuesday, where the assembly leadership will spearhead the collection of signatures to formalise the process.
Nairobi South B MCA Chege Waithera confirmed that the decision was unanimous, stressing that the house leadership across the political divide is united in pushing for Sakaja’s removal.
She insisted that the governor’s fate was sealed, citing stalled projects that have left residents questioning the county’s priorities.
“There are so many projects that have stalled within the wards and the residents have been asking why those projects have not been completed,” she said
According to the MCAs, Sakaja has lost touch with ordinary Nairobians and has the backing of fewer than a quarter of the assembly.
This, they argue, has worsened his political standing, especially with both ODM and UDA members rallying behind the planned impeachment.
Waithera maintained that the move will strictly follow the law, adding that the numbers already favour the motion.
“Signature collection will start very soon and all members are coordinated. We had about 96 members attend the Kamkunji, which is well above the required threshold,” she said.
Are Nairobi MCAs unhappy with Sakaja?
Many MCAs echoed her remarks, vowing to deal with the governor without hesitation, even if it means convening a special sitting to execute the resolution.
Roysambu MCA Sospeter Wamumbi said the members would not sacrifice their political ambitions for the sake of pleasing Sakaja.
Nairobi CBD MCA Mwaniki Kwenya also accused the governor of undermining elected leaders by allegedly working with their political rivals ahead of the 2027 polls.
“How can the governor work with our opponents when he supposed to coordinate development with us?,” Mwaniki asked.
This is not the first time the county assembly has attempted to remove Sakaja.
An earlier effort led by former Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve stalled before his death in April this year. Two separate petitions by residents had also been thrown out by the Speaker.
The latest move comes amid claims that the governor has lost the support of ODM leader Raila Odinga, as well as senior figures within the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.
With both political and assembly backing slipping away, Sakaja faces what may be the toughest political battle of his tenure.
Is Robert Alai sponsoring Sakaja's impeachment?
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has denied reports linking him to the motion seeking to remove Sakaja from office.
A section of Sakaja's supporters sent threatening messages to Alai, accusing him of sponsoring the impeachment motion.
In response to the allegations, Alai said he had nothing to do with the motion, adding that he was not even part of the meeting that resolved to oust the governor.
The Kileleshwa ward rep has been one of the vocal critics of Sakaja since his ascension to power in 2022.
What Happened to Joel Munuve?
Munuve died on Tuesday, April 22, after collapsing at his home. He was rushed to hospital but did not survive.
His death sparked speculation due to his vocal criticism of Sakaja.
The governor later addressed the matter, dismissing claims of foul play.
He explained that Munuve had no known chronic illness and an autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.
Sakaja said he wanted a thorough investigation carried out to establish what happened. He also condoled with Munuve’s family and pledged support during the mourning period.
